How Do Septic Tanks Work?

Waste from your home travels through a sewage pipe into the septic tank. Heavy solid waste sinks to the bottom. Any remaining water continues to move through to the drainage field (the area surrounding your septic tank). Over time, bacteria will break down the solid waste into hydrogen sulfide gas and sludge that floats to the top of the tank.

To maintain an efficient septic system, it’s important to periodically remove any solid waste that remains at the bottom of the tank. Failure to do can cause an overflow of solid waste. Solid waste contains viruses, bacteria, and parasites that can make you or your family very sick.

What’s Wrong with My Septic Tank?

Septic tanks can malfunction for a variety of reasons. Common reasons include:

Full tank – A septic tank that’s full can easily overflow. You can prevent this by having the septic tank drained periodically.

Tree roots – Unfortunately, that beautiful old oak tree in your backyard may have spread its roots too far and accidentally damaged your septic tank. Roots from trees and other plants commonly cause septic tank cracks and leaks.

Corroded septic tank walls – A build-up in hydrogen sulfide gas can cause damage to septic tank walls. Over time, these walls can crack and leak.

6 Warning Signs of a Malfunctioning Septic Tank

Since you probably can’t see your septic tank (most are buried underground), you can’t routinely inspect it.

However, the following warning signs can help you determine if you should contact us for professional septic system service:

Toilet, shower, and faucet drainage issues – If the water in your toilet, shower, or faucets takes longer to drain than usual, your septic tank may need an inspection.

Sewage backup – If sewage backs up into the water pipes in your home, please give us a call.

Lawn health – If you notice brown or yellow spots on your lawn that seem to spontaneously pop up, you should get your septic tank inspected. Septic waste that escapes from a leaky tank kills grass.

Lingering odors – A bad odor is a bad sign. Contact us for a septic tank inspection.

Frequent water pooling – If you notice frequent water pooling in the vicinity of your septic tank (drainage field) but haven’t experienced much rainfall, or the puddles seem to only form in that area, you should contact us immediately as your septic tank is probably full and needs to be drained.

Drainage field soft spots – If the soil in or around the drainage field begins to dip or appear irregular, this could indicate excess water and waste moving into the drainage field.

Septic System Maintenance

Routine septic tank maintenance can save you money over time. Plan to have your septic tank drained every three to five years – this will help prevent the tank from overflowing.

Periodic inspections also help us catch small issues before these issues become large septic repair projects.

Depending on the size of your septic tank and the number of people who live in your home, you may have to schedule our septic tank drainage services more often. We can give a professional recommendation about how often you should schedule this type of maintenance.

Septic Tank Inspection

When we visit your home to drain the septic tank, we will also conduct a full inspection to look for any cracks and leaks. We will also inspect the drainage field and surrounding areas for tree roots and other objects that could pose a threat to your septic system.

If we find an issue, we can go over your options, offer you a fair price for repairs, and get to work fixing the issue. We will give you a comprehensive estimate that tells you exactly what we need to do to repair your septic tank correctly.

Sewer Repair

Common causes of a sewer line malfunction include root damage and clogs caused by flushing items like thick paper towels and toilet paper, and feminine hygiene products down the toilet.

Signs of sewer line issues include:

  • Slow toilet, shower, and faucet drainage
  • Unusual noises when you run the water
  • Frequent water backups

You should contact us immediately if any of these issues persist. In many cases, we can repair the sewer pipe – this is more cost-effective than sewer pipe replacement.

We will also inspect all of the pipes to make no other leaks or clogs exist.
